FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about TOG ratings, nursery temperatures, and safe sleep for babies and toddlers.

What TOG sleep sack should I use?

The right TOG depends on the room temperature. As a general guide, use a 2.5 TOG sack for rooms between 16–20°C, a 1.5 TOG for 20–22°C, a 1.0 TOG for 22–24°C, and a 0.5 TOG for 24–27°C. Above 27°C, most manufacturers recommend skipping the sleep sack altogether.

Is 24°C too hot for a sleep sack?

24°C is at the upper end of comfortable for a baby's room. A lightweight 0.5 or 1.0 TOG sleep sack with only a short sleeve vest or nappy underneath is usually recommended. Keep the room ventilated and check your baby's chest or back of neck regularly.

Can babies wear sleep sacks in summer?

Yes, but choose a low TOG rating such as 0.5 or 1.0 and dress your baby in minimal layers. In very warm rooms above 27°C, many guidelines recommend going without a sleep sack and using only a light vest or nappy.

How do I know if my baby is overheating?

Signs of overheating include sweating, damp hair, flushed cheeks, rapid breathing, and a hot chest or back. The chest or back of the neck is a more reliable indicator than hands or feet, which are often cooler.

What is the ideal room temperature for a baby?

Most safe-sleep organisations, including The Lullaby Trust and the NHS, recommend a nursery temperature of 16–20°C (about 61–68°F) for safe baby sleep.
